Many indigenous young people in the Southern Philippines face a bleak future despite having the potential to excel in higher education. Not having the financial backing to enter college, they find dead end jobs in the city, settle for a life of poverty in their villages or get lured into joining anti-Christian groups or rebel armies.
The OMF Southern Philippines Indigenous Peoples Team would like to assist up to 15 talented students per year to obtain higher education at the cost of US$1000 per year. With education assistance, many of these youth will be helped and in the future they could provide mature leadership in the various areas where we minister. Typical courses taken by students include nursing, teaching, agriculture and computer.
Each student must have completed their high school education, pass the college entrance exam and undergo screening to assess their suitability to live and study in the city. Sponsored students would receive help with tuition & examination fees, uniform costs and living expense and would be encouraged to find part time work or living situations where they help with their expenses.
