Originally, the Manobo people were the rightful owners of the vast tracts of fertile land in Mindanao, Southern Philippines. Today, however, the Manobo people are one of the most neglected and disadvantaged people groups of the Philippines as their lands have been taken away from them and they are left living in the remote mountainous regions of central Mindanao far from towns, schools, colleges and hospitals.
Health and social welfare services to the Manobo are virtually non-existent. Living and working in the Manobo area, you cannot ignore these significant needs. Much of our OMF missionary’s time can become taken up assisting people with their medical and welfare challenges. Preaching the gospel to the Manobo must to go hand-in-hand with meeting their other needs as well. When Christ sent His disciples out into the world he commanded them not only to preach the gospel but also to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers and drive out the demons. The message of Christ’s love is holistic.
This project is not only aimed at meeting the physical and social needs of the Manobo people but it also sees the great opportunity to show the compassion of Christ in meeting the spiritual needs as well. One Manobo woman, whose life was saved through having a goiter removed, went home to her village and became a powerful witness in leading her wayward family and community back to the church.
